Rockfeller Center
at New York

Rockfeller Center : Our next destination was Rockefeller Center. It is a complex of 19 commercial buildings located in the center of Midtown Manhattan, spreading across Fifth Avenue and Seventh Avenue. It covers an area of 22 acres, and was built by the Rockefeller family.

This complex is an art deco marvel. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987- this amazing Art Deco complex.

30 Rockefeller Plaza, located in the center, is a 70 story building, built in 1934. It is one of the most populartourist attractions here.

This famous Center is also well known for its original art work. Paul Manship's gilded statue of Prometheusis one of the most famous work. Another famous sculpture by Lee Lawrie depicts Atlas supporting the earth.

There were flags from all nations flying high on the Center surrounding the sub-ground area and we were so happy to spot Indian flag standing proudly there. We spent sometime there enjoying the beauty of the art gracing the edifice, and the numerous flags moving slowly in the cool breeze.

The Rockefeller Center, known as the 'city in the city' is an exceptional example of civic planning. The Rockefeller Center has an observation deck atop the GE Building with the marvelous views of Central Park and the Empire State Building. Standing here and viewing New York City is a unique experience.

The Christmas tree of this place is world famous. The holiday season in New York officially begins with the tree lighting ceremony in Rockefeller Center shortly after Thanksgiving Day and the tree usually stays lit through early January. Since our visit was not in December, we could not see it.
