When we visited Windsor Castle England the day was bright and shiny, not like the previous day when most part of the day was gray and rainy. From London, we took about 30 minutes drive to reach there by car. As we were approaching Windsor we had good views of the castle ahead.
Windsor Castle, standing in the beautiful scenery of Berkshire, at the western edge of London, is an official residence of Queen Elizabeth of England which is also the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world.
Though it is an old palace of more than 900 years, it still remains a working palace and is the Queen's favourite weekend home. More than five hundred people live and work in Windsor.
A magnificent bronze statue of Queen Victoria stands majestically outside the castle walls.
There is so much to see inside in the castle. Visitors to Windsor Castle England are allowed to walk around the State Apartments, extensive suites of rooms of the working palace, and in certain time of the year visitors can see the Semi State rooms, which are some of the most marvelous interiors in the Palace.
Inside the magnificent castle you can see the Queen Mary's dolls' house,Drawings Gallery, and the 15th century St. George's Chapel, the burial place of ten sovereigns of England (including King Henry VIII's tomb) and setting for many Royal weddings. One of the best features of the castle is walking around the fortifications, and looking out over the parks.
Another great attraction at Windsor is The Changing of the Guard (Guard Mounting). - This is a ceremony where the new guard exchanges duty with the old guard. The Guards in their full-dress uniform of red tunics and bearskins, although in cold or wet weather they may be dressed in their 'great coats' too. The Guards are stationed at Victoria Barracks. They march up to and from the Castle accompanied by the Guards Band playing traditional military marches and the popular songs.
Outside the castle, there are many shops and cafes. We had our lunch there in one of the hotels. My attention was diverted towards the beautiful swans floating in the Thames nearby. Those who have time in hand can spend hours together watching this beautiful scenery in Windsor Castle.
Train and Bus facilities are also available to reach Windsor Castle London.
If you use the help of tour companies like Golden Tours, they will provide a whole day's Low cost tours which will also cover the other nearby attractions like Stonedge and Bath.
If you are there for a holiday, whether it is very short, or longer, don't miss this magnificent Victorian architecture, while you are in London, though it is little expensive.
Where to eat?
During our second visit to Windsor we preferred to go to a Spanish restaurant, and we really enjoyed it.If you like Spanish food you will enjoy La Tasca
